Sculpted skull in the Raku process.
Skull is fired in kiln to 1,850° and immediately removed and put into the can with combustible materials. Once lid is on the piece is left in the can for at least 30 minutes or till cooled. Enjoy!
This process dates back to the medieval times, it was used to "seal" the pottery to store things like bread and dried goods. Another tale is it was thought to keep evil spirits away from the foods stored in the vessels. Knowing what we know now, it is not used as functional pottery, just decorative.
